About Oncology Nurse of the Year

History of Nurse of the Year

Cancer Council Queensland’s Nurse of the Year began as a fundraising campaign in 1971 and saw widespread popularity throughout Queensland. The aim of the campaign was to encourage nurses to establish connections in their local communities and facilitate support for Cancer Council Queensland across the state. A large part of the campaign also centred around cancer awareness and education, and saw local nurses delivering talks about cancer prevention and support to regional communities.

Oncology Nurse of the Year today

Cancer Council Queensland has re-launched the Nurse of the Year campaign in 2022 with a new focus: to celebrate and support oncology nurses and their exceptional commitment to cancer care. The Oncology Nurse of the Year Awards were born from this idea, utilising the strong connections Cancer Council Queensland has made with regional nurses over the years. The awards centre on encouraging oncology nurses to further their professional development and recognise their essential contributions to the field of oncology.
